Defining and Understanding Trauma

Fight or Flight Explained

Fight, Flight, or Freeze

Fight, Flight, or Freeze is what happens in your body when you experience trauma. Just like animals go into Fight, Flight, or Freeze when they are in danger, so do we! When we feel unsafe, we might feel angry and want to fight or argue. We might feel anxious and want to run away. We also might freeze and not know what to do!

The most important thing to remember is that we can’t choose what we do — our brain chooses for us! There is never a reason to feel bad for what you do when you first experience a trauma. You don’t always make your own choices when in Fight, Flight, or Freeze.
